You would think that with a high quality brand like Rolls-Royce building your jet engines you’d be happy. For Gulfstream “happy” just won’t cut it when there is room for improvement. That’s why on the Gulfstream IV the engineers swapped out the Rolls-Royce Spey in exchange for the Rolls-Royce Tay Mk 611-8. The result? These machines kick out 13,850 lbs of thrust each and the inspection interval hits at every 8,000 hours. That is power and durability. The designers didn’t stop with the engines. Up in the cockpit is the new and improved six-screen, color EFIS. The Honeywell SPZ-8000 avionics suite. This system is proud to incorporate Collins radios, FMS and dual Honeywell laser inertial reference systems. If you like you can also add in triple laser INS, dual FMS and an air-to-ground telephone. A decent avionics suite is essential for safe flying, but there are other upgrades that Gulfstream found to fuse into their cockpits. This would be Goodyear Aerospace’s brake-by-wire system and a Dowty fail-passive steer-by-wire system. Those two upgrades along improve pilot maneuverability by leaps and bounds. You can’t look at the GIV without thinking of the GIII. One of the items that the GIV has over the G-III is cabin space to the tune of 4.5 extra feet. That might not seem like a lot, but in a private jet that kind of space can make a lot more room available all around. How much space? Certainly enough to fly 16 passengers with elbow room to spare. And all those flyers will benefit from a spacious galley and a full-sized bathroom with stand up shower. It truly is the only way to fly.
